Why Cissus Quadrangularis Is Used to Treat Bone and Joint Related Problems

Cissus quadrangularis is a plant that has different local names like pirandai, hadjod, veld grape, devil’s backbone, asthisamharaka, and adamant creeper. It is commonly grown in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Africa, Saudi Arabia, and some countries in South East Asia. It has been traditionally used to treat helminthic or parasitic infections, dyspepsia, pain, eye and ear diseases, asthma, and irregular menstruation. In some countries, the plant, as a whole, has been used to rehydrate patients. Other countries, on the other hand, use each part, the leaf, root, or stem, in different clinical situations. Since the perennial plant had positive therapeutic effects in the past, many scientists have closely studied the properties of cissus quadrangularis.

Bone Regeneration and Healing

The quadrangular, thick, and fleshy stem of the above-mentioned plant has been studied by some scientists in order to determine its bone regenerating and healing properties. It has been found out that the plant has a certain phytogenic, anabolic steroid that is capable of activating the estrogenic receptors of bone. It has also been discovered that the plant is capable of increasing the process of calcium, sulfur, and strontium uptake and metabolism. The mentioned compounds are important in the development of the immature bone-development cells. The natural alkaline phosphate that is present in bones is also efficiently secreted by the bone cells with the help of the plant components. Thus, the healing process of fractured bones is accelerated.

Another study has also found out that with the help of Cissus quadrangularis, the differentiation of osteoblasts (immature bone cells) is increased by 60%. Taking such into consideration, more mature bone cells are produced. The so-called 6?-O-trans-cinnamoyl-catalpol component of the plant’s stem is also capable of enhancing the process of osteoblast production. It was also revealed that the plant’s leaf is capable of increasing the levels of estrogen and Vitamin D. Medically speaking, the two compounds contribute highly to the strength of the bones. Thus, the degree and rate of bone loss is very low and slow.

Joint Pain Relief

Scientifically speaking, joints are surrounded by a soft tissue known as collagen. Together with joint fluid, it is one of the things that ensure that the joint will not create bone-to-joint friction. With such in regard, once the joint collagen is damaged or lost, the person affected will be experiencing joint pain. The sad thing is that as individuals start to age, the amount of collagen produced by the body starts to lessen. Fortunately, some studies have shown that Cissus quadrangularis is capable of synthesizing collagen present in osteoblasts.

Basing on the results of the studies conducted regarding the properties of the Cissus quadrangularis, some manufacturers developed dietary supplements using the plant. One of which is the VitaMonk Cissus Quadrangularis Extract supplement. It is a product that is packaged in a bottle that contains 120 capsules. Each 500-milligram capsule in the bottle contains Cissus quadrangularis and an inactive titanium dioxide compound that is enclosed by a vegetable cellulose capsule. Nevertheless, it should be noted that all dietary supplements are not covered by the guidelines of FDA. Likewise, they should be taken with precaution and physician’s recommendation if the individual has an underlying disease.
